WORKSHOP: The Green Hydrogen Value Proposition: Fundamental Policy Needs to Drive Market Development and Re-Imagine the Energy Ecosystem

This workshop will convene public and private sector stakeholders to discuss various technical, policy, and enabling environment topics related to the opportunities for hydrogen in economy-wide decarbonization. Topics to be discussed include the role of green hydrogen long duration energy storage, how to transition away from diesel fuel backup generation, and California’s hydrogen hub developments and opportunities. Panels within this workshop are included below:

 

Panel 1: The Role of Long-Duration Energy Storage and Green Hydrogen for Electric Reliability

This panel will touch on recent long-duration energy storage (LDES) research and will discuss the role of clean, flexible technologies such as green hydrogen as a long-duration renewable energy storage solution to support long-term grid reliability.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn how green hydrogen can provide significant flexibility for the power system and how the value of these services can be recognized and compensated appropriately.
  2. Learn about the cost drivers and innovative cost reduction pathways to scaling green hydrogen LDES
  3. Understand the value propositions for green hydrogen LDES and electricity market structures that could incentivize their deployment

Panel 2: Goodbye, Fossil Fueled BUGS!  

The effects of climate change are real, and as a result, extreme weather, wildfires, and other natural disasters are making multi-day electric grid outages commonplace, driving up sales of fossil-fueled backup generators. Learn about innovative, scalable, emission-free alternatives and how distributed green hydrogen production can help address electric resiliency needs.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn more about the frequency and impacts of multi-day outages.
  2. Learn how a green hydrogen-enabled microgrids can increase energy resiliency and security.
  3. Understand the applications for microgrids (rural electric reliability, hospitals/critical facilities, data centers)
  4. Understand how technology innovation (e.g., storage and generation) can enable this important use case of green hydrogen.

Panel 3: California’s Green Hydrogen Hub Developments

Learn about green hydrogen’s game changing role in achieving California State’s vision for economy wide deep decarbonization. Discuss key takeaways from more than two years of a regional hub development effort in Southern California, HyBuild LA, and how these findings can help inform and help shape California’s hub development work as well as hub development efforts nationally.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Get an overview of HyBuild LA and the steps California is taking to make green hydrogen a reality.
  2. Consider the needed infrastructure to serve this vision; and achieve mass-scale low delivered cost green hydrogen.
  3. Share best practices, lessons learned and recommendations for California (and other hubs) to collectively accelerate progress.
