The main customer of the INVENT project at the time of writing is the University of California, San Diego. Additional customers will be added in subsequent phases of the project. Please see below for a testimonial from Bryon Washom, UC San Diego Director of Strategic Energy Initiatives: “Out of the 146 Level II EV chargers installed at UC San Diego, I regard the Nuvve V2G and VGI demonstration projects as the highest potential for making a significant impact on national and international efforts in electric storage mobility. I fully concur with the recent LBNL findings (http://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/aabe97/meta) of the parallel renewable energy and energy storage mandates can provide an untapped synergistic opportunity for clean transportation to be an enabler for a clean electricity grid. LBNL forecasted the hourly system-wide balancing problems arising out to 2025 as more renewables are deployed were then quantified with the system-wide balancing benefits from EVs modulating the charging or discharging of their batteries to mitigate renewable intermittency, without compromising the mobility needs of drivers. LBNL showed that with its EV deployment target and with only one-way charging control of EVs, California can achieve much of the same benefit of its Storage Mandate for mitigating renewable intermittency, but at a small fraction of the cost. Moreover, EVs provide many times these benefits if V2G charging control becomes widely available. Thus, EVs support the CA’s renewable integration targets while avoiding much of the tremendous capital investment of stationary storage that can instead be applied towards further deployment of clean vehicles.”
