The Beacon Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project is the first grid scale BESS constructed for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). The 20 megawatt (MW), 10 megawatt-hour (MWh) BESS is helping with the integration of 795 MW of LADWP renewable solar and wind power generation assets connected to the Beacon Solar Plant AC Station and the Barren Ridge Switching Station. The BESS provides capability to offset reactive power issues, offsets delivery times for solar generated energy, regulates frequency response, and allows for controlled energy dispatch into the LADWP electrical transmission network. The Beacon BESS provides resiliency and reliability to LADWP’s electrical system grid, and allows for greater utilization of key renewable energy assets, that are connected to LADWP’s largest renewable energy corridor. The Beacon BESS reached commercial operation October 12, 2018 and is in-service. As renewable energy becomes an even larger share of LA’s total energy portfolio, BESS provides a carbon-free, clean energy solution integrating intermittent renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, onto the grid. It will also help avoid over-generation of solar, while ensuring LADWP continues to meet Federal and State grid reliability standards.
