The Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL) Advancion Energy Storage Array represents the first grid-scale, battery-based energy storage system to make a footprint in the 15-state Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) region. Through work with the system operator, IPL has been able to deliver a 40 MW system that provides reliability and affordable energy to a city that has proven to be one of the most progressive in the US in implementing new energy technology. Indianapolis counts with the second highest solar energy capacity per capita, solely behind Honolulu. The IPL Array is the fourth deployment of AES’ Advancion® 4 technology since November 2015. Advancion is designed to scale, through both its unique nodal architecture and partnerships with key component technology providers, resulting in the rapid deployment of grid scale systems. In the case of the IPL Array, Samsung and Parker Hannifin provided certified batteries and inverters that contributed to a construction time of less than 1 year. The balance of plant was provided by the Casteel Corporation, marking the third Advancion project the company has completed in the US.
