Convergent Energy + Power (Convergent), the leading independent developer of energy storage solutions, commissioned North America’s biggest behind-the-meter energy storage system (10 MW/20 MWh) in Sarnia, Ontario, on August 1, 2018. Convergent contracted with SNC Lavalin, the leading design and construction services provider, to engineer the system including electrical, civil design and construction management. IHI Energy Storage provided the battery technology. The system reduces Ontario’s Global Adjustment (GA) charge for an industrial customer. GA, which comprises up to 70% of the average industrial electricity bill for Class A customers in Ontario, incentivizes large electricity users to reduce their consumption during expensive grid periods. The system combines cutting-edge Li-Ion technology and design with Convergent’s unparalleled peak dispatch services, maximizing customer savings. The facility has the ability to inject and store up to 10 MW of electrical power, interconnected directly at the customer’s primary distribution system. Convergent built, owns, and operates the plant, comprised of six 1.67 MW energy storage battery enclosures with associated HVAC equipment. The energy storage units operate in parallel with the utility. SNC-Lavalin performed the feasibility study to analyze impacts of BESS against the facility. North America’s biggest BTM ESS wouldn’t have been possible without a forward-thinking customer.
