Services Provided: Frequency Response

In 2017, the Bermuda Electric Light Company (BELCO) issued a request for proposals for a 10 MW, 5 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to provide spinning reserve reduction and frequency response. This is the first utility scale battery system for the island and will save the customers money as the BESS reduces the fuel normally burned to ensure a high reliability of electric supply to the island.   Saft was ultimately selected and executed the turnkey project in less than one year from contract signing to commercial operation. Saft manufactured six (6) Intensium Max+ 20M medium power containerized battery systems and lead the project which included ABB inverters and the BESS control and communication system, and DELTRO provided site management and equipment installation.  The system has been in operation since April of 2019 and has exceeded expectations. The BESS has automatically provided spinning reserve until another generator could be started during several major under-frequency events.  Most importantly, the BESS has saved BELCO and their customers more than $200,000 per month in fuel costs and reduced carbon dioxide emissions by at least 400 tons per month.
